Manual Lymphatic Drainage
The lymphatic system is the bodies’ transport and waste disposal system. In effect, it works as a giant detoxification plant, regularly cleansing the tissues of the body and maintaining the fluid balance within the tissues, thereby ensuring tissue health.
There are possibly 500 to 700 lymph nodes in the body. These nodes filter out unwanted matter that has drained from the cells of the body into the lymphatic system, they are therefore central to aiding in disease prevention.
Manual lymphatic drainage is a specific type of massage technique that enhances lymphatic flow. The major lymph nodes of the body are cleared by the therapist then, very light pressure is used on the skin to assist in ‘pumping’ the lymph along the natural lymphatic pathways leading to these drainage nodes of the body. The duration of the session will depend on the specific reason for the treatment. It may be between 30 to 45 minutes.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage can work well for people who have simple oedema (swelling) and for people who have developed a sluggish lymphatic flow due to lifestyle factors or past health issues. Screening, assessment and possible doctors’ referral is done prior to this treatment as there can be contraindications with some individuals.
